Army probing molestation charge against Lt Gen

The Indian Army is probing a molestation charge against a serving lieutenant general, a senior officer said on Thursday, adding that strict action would be taken against him if this was found to be true.

The complaint had been filed by the wife of the technical secretary to Lt Gen AK Nanda, the army's engineer-in-chief, the officer said.

The officer said the army was probing the complaint against Nanda, but certain "loopholes" had been found.

"The (Indian Army) chief won't tolerate such behaviour and if it is found to be true, action will be taken," the officer said on condition of anonymity.

Nanda has not put in his papers and continues to the engineer-in-chief "as of now", he said.

Nanda, who has about a year of service left, has also served as the director general of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The complaint had been lodged with Bharti Singh, the wife of Indian Army chief Gen VK Singh, who had passed it on to her husband. Bharti Singh heads the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA).

The technical secretary is now posted in Bhopal.
